How to shape your nails: Tips for filing your nails

Everyone has their favorite shape and nail shape trends come and go.  What’s your favorite nail shape? Square, round, oval, squoval, or pointed? Shaping your nails at home can be tricky especially when you have to do the opposite hand! Here are some tips for shaping your nails at home – all you need is a nail file!

Square (aka Straight)

•Begin by filing your nail totally straight across

•Very lightly file the corners so that they are not left sharp

•If your nails are shorter and rounded you may have to let them grow out before you can have a true square shape

Round

•File both sides into a curve starting at free edge until desired shape is achieved

Squoval

•Keeps sides straight and file tip only into rounded shape

Oval

•Keep sides straight, then round the tip and soften the corners

Pointed

•File sides inward to create a point at the tip then gently round the tip

Use a good-quality file and try to file in one direction only (going from outer edge inward) to avoid snagging and tearing the nail.  Use light strokes and check shape and evenness by holding your hands in different positions.

Here are 2 of my favorite nail files:

Butter London Banana File $2.50                               CND Kanga File $2.25
