The Benefits of Having a Professional Facial
Funny thing about western Canada: people are more likely to pay money to have their toes taken care of professionally than their faces.
But what blows our minds as estheticians is that people will feel bad about spending $20 or so more on a facial.
Why is this? Is it because they feel like they can take care of their face on their own? Granted feet can be hard to reach, but your face is what people really look at!
When going through esthetics school, pedicures are one of the first things learned at school. The theory is easy, and the work is essentially the same for every client, the products don’t really change.
When we get the facial section, there is a huge amount of information. We learn all the muscles of the face and how to massage them. We delve into biology, physiology and chemistry. Understanding skin and absorption, learning about ingredients and skin conditions. We learn the complexities of working with an individual to help them.
I can guarantee you there is a wealth of information in any estheticians head that very rarely gets tapped.
So here is a list of reasons why every so often you should polish your toes yourself and go talk to a professional about your skin.
- I said it above, they are a professional. You see someone for your hair. You listen to their advice and very rarely miss an appointment. Estheticians know what they are talking about. A good esthetician will educate you and make you a better consumer. You’ll learn your actual skin type and what to look for in products.
- Skin is dynamic and changes constantly. Weather, medication, age, pollution, hormones, stress: these can all cause quick and intense changes. Most people cannot use the same cleanser and moisturizer the whole year, much less their entire life. Going for regular facials allows you and your esthetician to work together and support your skin as goes through all of this.
- Intensify results. They have access to stronger and more active ingredients. While home care is great and very important, going for a deep down exfoliation and hydration treatment can make a difference you would never see with home care alone. Microdermabrasion, glycolics and powerful masks come to mind.
- Relaxation. For a lot of people this is the only reason they come in. They want time for themselves and don’t want the esthetician to talk or try to sell them product. I encourage you to actively participate in the beginning and end of the facial. Really engage during the skin care analysis. Talk about expectations, what you actually do at home and what results you’d like to see. Relax and let someone else worry about you for an hour. At the end, let her talk about what she feels your skin could benefit from. You absolutely should ask about why she recommended each and every product. Every esthetician’s philosophy should be “The right product for the right person” and they should be able to answer those questions.
The reality is that a facial service can be pricey, and then home care products are a significant investment. If it comes down to one or the other, I recommend getting a skin care consultation in the form of a facial at least once, then going with good quality products. Pop back in for a refresher whenever possible. Or alternate your monthly pedicure (if you are fancy) with a facial every two months.
How important is your skin health to you?
