Eco-Friendly Beauty

After last weekend’s Sustainable Living Expo (Western Canada’s largest lifestyle show for the eco-conscious consumer) we got to thinking why not talk about some earth-friendly things to watch for when choosing cosmetics? You may not realize just how much (or how little) certain brands do to care for the environment.

• Look for products which use biodegradable or recyclable packaging, non-toxic plastic
• Boxes, bags, and brochures should be made from FSC paper (Forest Stewardship Council) derived from sustainably managed forests
• Inks on brochures and packages should be Vegetable-based
• Look for ingredients cultivated using organic & biodynamic farming methods and farming from controlled areas
• No pesticides or harsh chemicals

Eminence Organics is probably the most earth-friendly skincare company out there. Their organic farm in Hungary is powered by solar and wind energy and uses geothermal heating in their laboratory. They use only natural compost during planting and harvest only from controlled areas. Both planting and harvesting are done by manual labor which produces little to no carbon dioxide.
