How to apply false eyelashes step by step

Thursday August 9th, 2012

Everybody wants them, but only a lucky few are born with them: long, thick, dark eyelashes.  Well, the good thing is that it’s pretty easy to fake them!  Do it yourself false lashes are very popular and come in all different styles and sizes.  Whether you want them for everyday use or just for a special occasion or photo shoot, we have a simple step by step guide that makes application easy!

There are 2 types of false eyelashes; strip lashes and individual or clustered eyelashes.  Strip lashes are one piece that contains many hairs and creates a full lash line.  Individual and cluster eyelashes are either one single hair or a cluster of hairs. They can be applied just to fill in sparse areas or all over to create any type of look from natural to dramatic.

Individual lashes                         Strip lashes                          Clustered lashes

First, begin by trimming your false lashes as necessary.  Most strip lashes will be a bit too long to fit your eye so trim them with a cuticle scissor to fit.  You may carefully trim the length of the lashes as well if you like.  If you trim the length, try to trim each hair slightly different for a more natural look.

If applying individual or cluster lashes, squeeze some eyelash glue out onto a piece of tinfoil.  Use a tweezer to pick up the lash and gently dip the root in glue.  Apply the lash as close to your natural lash line as possible and gently press using a q-tip or the tip of your tweezers.

If applying strip lashes, you may either squeeze the glue directly onto the base of the strip, swipe the base of the strip through pre-squeezed glue, or brush the glue onto your lash line using a small, flat brush (same way you would apply eyeliner).  Next, press your strip lash onto your eyelid as close to your natural lash line as possible working from the outer corner inward.  Again you may press with a q-tip to ensure it has been firmly adhered.

Once applied, if your false lash doesn’t look right, take the piece off right away and try again.

The first few times may seem tricky, but once you get the hang of it you will be surprised how easy it is!

Here are some of the false eyelash products we carry at Spa Boutique:

Jane Iredale Professional Faux Lashes & Glue

Luxe Natural & Synthetic Lashes and Glue

Paperself Eyelashes

Eyelash conditioners and stimulators: how do they work?

Friday March 30th, 2012

It seems like long, thick eyelashes are really in demand these days. Eyelash extensions have become really popular and its become a regular service in most spas.  Eyelash lounges specializing in eyelash extensions have also been popping up all over the place. Another thing that’s become icreasingly popular is the use of eyelash growth stimulators to increase the length and volume of your natural lashes. There are tons of so-called stimulators out there.  Some are more on the natural side while others contain potent and even potentially dangerous ingredients.

Eyelash stimulators work by hydrating and strengthening the lash as well as stimulating growth at the follicle.  Here is a list of the most common key ingredients and their purposes:

Panthenol:

A provitamin of B5 which coats the hair and seals the surface.  It lubricates the hair shaft making it appear shiny.

Peptides:

Portions of protein made up of linked amino acids.  Peptides attach to the hair cuticle giving the impression of thicker hair.  They also bond with chemically-treated hair to repair damage.  Peptides may stimulate hair growth and speed up the hair growth cycle.  Copper peptides are said to inhibit the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a toxin that causes thinning hair.  Copper peptides are also said to enlarge the hair follicle, promoting growth.

Amino Acids:

Molecules which are essential in hair growth.  Topically the can build body in thinning hair. They also increase the moisture content improving hair flexibility, manageability and strength.

Botanical Extracts:

Added to the formulation to increase moisture, durability, and elasticity of the hair.

Prostaglandins or prostaglandin analogs/derivitives:

Potent hormone-like substance found in most tissues and organs of the body.  The name is derived from the prostate gland as prostaglandin was first isolated from seminal fluid.  Prostaglandins are used in the treatment of glaucoma; an eye disease in which the optic nerve is damaged.  In eyelash products, prostaglandins or prostaglandin analogs (most widely used are bimatoprost, travoprost, and latanoprost) are proven to stimulate hair growth but are also known to have some potentially serious side effects including blurred vision, burning, itching, change in eye color, and darkening of the eyelid skin.

Eyelash conditioners and stimulators vary in price and size, but the application is pretty much the same with all of them.  Most come in a tube similar to a liquid eyeliner and are brushed in a thin layer along the lash line.  Many are to be used once per day and resuls are usually expected after 2-6 weeks of regular use (depending on the brand).

Here is a list of the prostaglandin-free eyelash stimulators we carry at Spa Boutique:

Aminogenesis Lash Genesis

Priori Eyelash Recovery Serum

B.Kamins Eyelash Fortifier

Obagi Elastilash

Jan Marini Marinilash

Talika Lipocils

Fusion Beauty Stimulash

Lashem Measurable Difference Lash Gel
