Ravishing Red Lips: 10 great tips
Tuesday January 24th, 2012

Red lips seem to be all the rage this season popping up in all of the most fashion-forward magazines around the world! If you’re like me and you never go beyond the barely noticeable pale pinks, but wish you could do the red and just don’t know how, follow this guide for some great tips from the experts:
1. Find the right shade for your skin tone: If you have a cool complexion, choose cooler reds like a true red or a pinkish red. If you have a warm complexion, choose warmer reds with a brown base, like a brick or rusty red
2. If you are unsure about your shade choose a cool, blue-red shade because they are more flattering to most complexions than warm reds with orange tones.
3. Line lips with a lip pencil before applying lipstick to prevent the color from seeping into fine lines or feathering outside the lip line
4. Fill in lips with lip pencil to act as a primer – lipstick will last longer and stay put
5. After you’ve applied your color, blot with a tissue, then re-apply color for more drama
6. If your teeth are not-so-white a warm toned red can make them look yellow, blue-toned reds can make teeth look whiter
7. Keep the rest of your makeup subtle! If you go for a bold lip don’t go for a bold eye or cheek (less is more)
6. If you aren’t quite ready for a full-on red lip, ease into it with a gloss as they can be a bit more sheer
7. Red lips can bring out red imperfections in the skin so be sure to cover blemishes with a yellow-based concealer
8. Use a lip brush for more control
9. Pair your red lips with a red accessory or a red nail polish
10. Deep reds can make thin lips look smaller so if you are thin-lipped you might want to use a lip plumper to add more volume

Coming Soon: Limited Edition Jane Iredale Sweet 15 Kit
Wednesday July 8th, 2009

Every so often a product comes along that just seems too intensely awesome to be true.
Those of you out there with a love of mineral makeup, of palettes or of simply beautiful makeup colours must listen up.
Within the next week Jane Iredale will finally be releasing their 15th anniversary kit called Sweet 15.
It blows my mind. I first caught glimpses of it on when it was given as a gift to company workers in Asia. Then there were whispers of it exclusively at Nordstroms in the US. Here in Canada we get everything a bit later, and I was starting to be pretty sure it was never going to be a “thing” for us.
Let me reveal to you the unbelievable nature of what they are offering up:
- 15 eyeshadows, 7 of which are brand new colors (Oyster, Peach Sherbet, Glimmer Gold, Copper Brown-new, Topaz Sparkle-new, Taupe, Aquamarine, Dark Suede, Petal Shimmer-new, pink Cloud-new, Sparkle Dust-new, Bubbly-new, Silver-new, Supernova and Charcoal.)
- 3 blushes. Cotton Candy (cool, gold flecked pink) and Whisper (warm, gold flecked peach) and Bronzer
- 3 lip plumpers. Milan, LA, Tokyo. Beautifully sheer, hydrating plumpers
So that’s 21 products that at an invidual cost would be upwards of $350. The cost of this jem? Around $90.
$90.
I am giddy.
So if you feel like your makeup stash is needing a bit of an overhaul, you would like to up the quality of what you’re using on your skin everyday, or if you just love beautiful things; you are going to want to keep your eyes peeled for this.
They are limited edition and will sell VERY QUICKLY due to how wonderful of a deal it is.
We’ve been told we’ll be getting ours sometime next week and there will be a pre-order option for all of our customers that have purchased Jane Iredale from us before.
Check back with www.spaboutique.ca for lots of great spa brand products.

Lip Plumpers- How Do You Choose!?
Thursday April 9th, 2009
Why just gloss when you can (maybe) plump as well?
The debate continues as to whether plumpers work or not. When I asked the ladies on Twitter, the general response seemed to be that they were skeptical, turned off by tingling or stickiness, or boyfriends had vetoed the practice. There were a few kindred spirits that still have a love for “active” lip products. I remain faithful.
Thus far we carry a few plumping options from two of our lines. Jane Iredale offers up their JustKissed Lip Plumpers and the MoreLip product. While FusionBeauty brings the award winning LipFusion to the table.
The way most lip plumpers are designed to work is by slightly irritating the delicate skin on the lips. The most common ingredients are cinnamon, peppermint, ginger, peppers. This increases blood flow to the area resulting in a slight puffiness. The other option is to use peptides, which are absorbed into the skin and help to improve collagen production, improving the overall pout.
JI’s JustKissed uses the peptide technology. It’s more subtle and gentler than others, with just a very slight tingle. But overtime there will be a slight increase. The formula hydrates with Vitamin E.
If you want an immediate and more dramatic look, then LipFusion is the way to go. This particular plumper has won numerous awards and is all over the place. The difference is that it uses Micro Injected Marine Collagen. What does this mean? I have no idea.
Kidding.
As far as any education or research I’ve seen, collagen applied to any part of the body does absolutely nothing.
At all.
It doesn’t matter how much you paid for it.
The reason being that the chains of amino acids that the proteins are made up of are too large to be absorbed by the skin. That’s why peptides work. They are shorter chains, can be absorbed and stimulate the skin to make it’s own collagen.
LipFusion uses new technology that dehydrates the molecule (is that a thing?) which then makes it small enough to absorbed. When in the epidermis it rehydrates with the body’s own moisture and swells, cause a slight plumping action. Fancy. It could also be that collagen applied directly to skin is known to cause irritation. In either scenario, there will be a small amount of swelling.
I have yet to come across anything that backs this new technology up. HOWEVER, I am an enormous lip gloss fanatic. I have piles of them. Gobs of them. I don’t know specifically what it is that I love about LipFusion. That’s a lie. I know exactly what I love about this stuff. Here’s a list:
1)The gorgeous, deep-yet-somehow-sheer shades in an awe inspiring selection. You know, colors with depth and complexity that represent you as an individual…through gloss.
2)The slight sparkle that delights my inner raven
3)The light lemon taste and scent
4)It’s not sticky! But still manages to stay on for a long time.
5)The super chic packaging. I love the shiny, reflective cap. It doubles as a mirror!
6)The limited edition ones that come with a crystal studded cap! CRYSTALS! (There’s that raven again)
7)Big tube. This could be a pro or con. But I usually motor through glosses and these last a long time.
I do find a slight amount of plumping, or as some people describe it, an awareness of the lips which just makes you feel sexier. Sometimes, depending on the color, it almost feels numbing. Which I don’t understand. Whether or not it actually does plump/tingle/numb has become irrelevant for me. I now collect these things like mad. They are absolutely the prettiest gloss colors I’ve ever seen.
So if you’re looking for a subtle, natural plump that develops over time, Jane Iredale JustKissed is the way to go. If you want the drama and a stunning array of colors then it’s all about the LipFusion. (I may or may not have some of each)
What a wonderful dilemma!
